Helping young people to achieve and move on
In the YST, we pride ourselves on our integrated services which gives the young people we work with opportunities based on their needs and interests.
One resource we are particularly proud of is our wood workshop. The workshop offers young people the opportunity to learn lessons for life in a hands-on way and through conversation, relating the process of safely completing a task comparing to everyday life occurrences needing patience, problem solving and the right or appropriate application.
It also offers the opportunity to develop a sense of pride, a strong work ethic and (often) much needed confidence to learn new skills.
The workshop is mainly used with young people, who are completing allocated hours for direct or indirect reparation to victims of crimes they have committed, through achievable, empowering, and planned activities.
The young person was then referred by his YST Case Responsible Officer to our Programme Officer team.
Charles, the Programme Officer, who worked with the young person said,
The young person did not demonstrate a natural ability for woodwork but was willing to learn and followed my instructions well, making good progress and completing several woodwork projects. They showed maturity in their conversations around offending and in changing interactions with peers”. We are pleased to say that this young person made such good progress - completing all his tasks and managing to find and secure employment - that his order was revoked early”.
Here the deputy Police & Crime Commissioner for Gloucestershire, Nick Evans, proudly shows off his recently completed milk bottle holder, which was the last project worked on by the young person.
