What is UK Youth Parliament (UKYP)?
UKYP provides young people aged 11-18 with opportunities to use their elected voice to bring about social change through meaningful representation and campaigning. It is overseen by the British Youth Council and is usually supported locally by the local authority. For more info visit the UKYP website>
What is an Member of Youth Parliament (MYP)?
An MYP is a young person who has been elected by other young people to represent their peers within a certain geographical area. They represent their peers at a local level by campaigning on their behalf on issues that affect them. They also represent young people at a regional level through involvement with regional events and meetings. They represent at a national level too through attendance at the annual conference, the Make Your Mark campaign and annual sitting in the House of Commons.
Who can vote or stand as an MYP?
Any young person who is 11-18 years old who lives and/or goes to school in the constituency (or election area can stand as an MYP and vote for their MYP.
How long will MYPs stand for?
Normally MYPs will stand for 2 years unless they turn 19 during their term or need to stand down for any other reason.
MYPs in Gloucestershire
In Gloucestershire three MYPs are normally elected to represent:
- Cheltenham and Tewkesbury
- Gloucester and Forest of Dean
- Stroud and Cotswolds
