Duke of Edinburgh Award’s presentation was awesome.
During August we delivered our Additional Needs Open Expedition (ANOE) course. Staff within the team, including a Young leader who was completing her Gold Residential Section, worked with 6 young people with additional needs to enable them to complete their Gold DofE Expedition Section. Activities during the week included walking, cooking, team building and personal challenges. The week culminated in a presentation to family and friends.
One of the young people's parents said later in an email to the YST:
Can I thank you for all your hard work and assistance to K on the Gold expedition. She had a wonderful time and for someone who has communication difficulties she has been talking non-stop about everything and everyone. She was a very happy girl when I picked her up".
YST's Operations Director, Kat Aukett, offered some reflections on her attendance at the Expedition Aim presentation event, where she presented young people with their DofE Expedition Section certificates:
As always, I was honoured to attend the Duke of Edinburgh's Award presentation to young people with addtional needs after completing the Gold Expedition Section of their programme. I listened and watched as the group worked together to present the story of their week to family and friends. If someone stumbled one of the other young people helped. I was, as always in awe.
Every time I attend this event, it reminds me of what can be accomplished when people support each other and are encouraged to believe in themselves. It reminds me that my struggles can be overcome and it reminds me of the worth of every young person. It was with huge pride I gave out their awards and it was with deserved pride that they received them".
Tim Oliver, Activities Team leader, who leads on DofE said:
I feel immensely privileged to lead such a committed and skilled team who continually go over and above expectations to deliver such transformative and life affirming activities. To watch the physical and metaphorical journeys each young person undertook over the week, overcoming challenges with resilience and good humour, was humbling”
